Just received 20" of extremely wet heavy snow in Dunbarton, NH on Oct 30th, 2011. I bought snow blower from Lowes and never expected to be putting this thing to the test so early and not with this much snow.
All I can say is WOW. I've owned many different blowers over the years, including a $1900 Simplicity. This thing just moved this snow as if it wasn't there. It did bog at the street, but still went right thru it. I was doing full width cuts in Forward 1, not babying it with 1/4 passes. Can't wait until I can use with a normal storm.
My only complaint is the use of the joystick chute, works great, just weird to get used to. May be from years of use with other blowers.
I have no rating on longevity of machine, but highly recommend from recent experience.

Great blower, right price with alot of features!!

Bought this model snow blower in Sept 2010. I opted for the larger 277cc engine and wider 28" clearing path of this model vs the power steering and smaller 208cc engine and smaller 26" clearing path of the next model(Storm 2620)down. This is my first snow blower purchase, and I am extremely happy with it. There are several features I would like to comment on, because they work so well! After last winters storms (I live in the North East, we got hammered all winter)this snow blower has proven itself extremely capable of removing the heaviest and wettest snow without much effort. I clear over 100ft of EOD (end of driveway) each snowfall and this blower has no problems shifting the entire pile across the street. The 277cc engine has plenty of power, yet still manages not to go through fuel all that much. I was expecting to use twice as much fuel than I did. The extended chute works great, though the control(joystick) takes a little getting used to. It's a really sweet deal to be able to adjust the chute while "on the fly"! It has per-determined spots for it to lock the chute at specific angles, and if you do get it into those spots the chute will "drift" from here you set it. Not a big deal, more of a learning curve for user than a real flaw, but worth mentioning. Starting this machine is so simple, follow the directions and it will start on the first pull every time. I only used the electric start option once when I first bought the blower, and I haven't needed it since! When it starts, it's smooth and responsive, though the noise from the exhaust is a little loud, but not a deal breaker. We have a smaller 208cc blower at work, and it's slightly quieter, but not by all that much. The heated hand grips are fantastic! You will not need gloves, because the handles heat up so much you have to turn them off after 20 minutes! And I am not complaining! The tires provide excellent traction even in deep drifts. The factory headlamp is more of a suggestion than a useful lamp, being center mounted it is always being blocked by the chute, and it's just not powerful enough. Having 6 speeds forward and 2 reverse is nice, though I only honestly use 3 out of 8 speeds(Full speed reverse, 1st and 3rd)which the reverse is a little slow even in high, but I am seeing that everyone says that about all the blowers out there. There are a few accessories that I added, drift cutters for the really deep stuff, a snow cabin to keep me dry, a auxiliary spotlight for night time clearing. All in all, I really am happy with this purchase.

SNOW STUD IN MICHIGAN

After owning this for just over a year now I can honsetly tell you this is worth $200 more compared to other models in the $899 range! I have had no issues,repairs or regrets at all and Lowe's and Troy Bilt have been doing me right for over eight years on my other products(riding lawn mower, weed wacker and more ) Thnaks!

Bad light design

I used this blower once in the winter of 2011-2012. At the end of that use, the bulb blew out and the lens cover melted. Last fall I was given replacements. This winter, during the second use, the bulb and lens I had just installed blew out again on the second use. The lighting on this blower is very badly designed. There is no ventilation for the bulb heat, and the plastic on the lens is not a thermoplastic. When I talked to folks at Troy about this, they seemed unconcerned. It was somehow my fault. The rest of the blower is great. The lighting system needs to be completely re-designed...use a metal housing with a glass lens.

Just bought a troy-bilt 2840. It is listed as 277 cc. What does that translate into horsepower? Just curious. I was advised to get at least 8 hp for a blower.

GREAT SNOW BLOWER BUT!!

Troy bilt dual stage blowers are great, have had any problems with mine, however when I purchased it, the impellers were assembled backwards at the factory, took a while to figure this out and had to fix it myself since it was snowing out and I didn't have a time to take it somewhere, make sure the impellers are angled "inward toward the center" of the blower when your looking at it from front. // \ Mine were \ // if that makes any sense so it wasn't a clean job, (lots of clean up shoveling afterwards.. Not sure how often this happens but beware. other than that maintenance was minimal and durable..

Storm 2840 is a Beast of a Machine

I purchased this machine from Lowe's in 9/2011 in Central NJ and did not have an opportunity to use it until Jan 3, 2014. I replaced a smaller 22 inch Simplicity unit that was 18 years old, but still worked well. I had no idea snow removal was so much easier with the right machine. I've used it 5 times so far and there is nothing that it won't move. Today's snow removal was heavy wet slush and I wanted to put the machine to the true test. This machine was a beast. Never had to stop once to clear the chute from the wet slush. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone that has to move snow with very little if any effort.
